Determining Link’s Required Stamina for Obtaining the Master Sword in Zelda: TOTK

Retrieving the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is not just a matter of hunting the iconic weapon down, but also a test of Link’s stamina. Finding the Master Sword in TOTK is naturally one of the game’s main quests, and one which takes Link on a journey across Hyrule. However, even if Link has located it, actually drawing the sword is no small feat.

The Master Sword has a history as long as that of Hyrule, with its origins as the Goddess Sword and subsequent empowerment being a major part of Skyward Sword’s story. Since then, the Sword of Evil’s Bane has most often been laid to rest in the center of the Lost Woods. For example, Link retrieves it from under the watchful eye of the Great Deku Tree in Breath of the Wild, where the Master Sword tests Link by draining his Hearts. But in Tears of the Kingdom, drawing the Master Sword brings another unique challenge, this time draining his Stamina as he fights to maintain his grip atop a dragon.

Acquiring five Stamina Vessels means that before Link can draw the Master Sword, the player will first need to complete 20 shrines. This will provide them with all the Light of Blessings needed to trade with Goddess Statues. Although, it should be noted that Link can also gain a Stamina Vessel as a reward for completing the “A Call From the Depths” side adventure. If this is chosen over the alternative Heart Container, then players will only need to complete 16 Shrines instead.

Finding and claiming the Master Sword is a major step towards facing the final boss of any Zelda game, but the recent open-word entries to the franchise have given players far more agency in how and when they take up the legendary weapon. Of course, similar to BOTW before it, the stamina requirement in TOTK does ensure that players will have explored at least some of Hyrule. Overcoming the challenge of acquiring five Stamina Vessels beforehand, as well as solving TOTK’s Lost Woods puzzle and reaching the Great Deku Tree, means that the player can feel that they have truly earned the Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
