A recent study conducted by researchers at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) has debunked the common belief that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed-breed dogs.
Dr. Kate Creevy, the chief veterinary officer of the Dog Aging Project and a professor in the VMBS Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, emphasized that while certain diseases are associated with specific dog breeds, it is not accurate to generalize that all purebred dogs are at a higher risk of illness.
The study, which involved surveying over 27,000 dog owners, revealed that common health issues such as ear infections and osteoarthritis affect both purebred and mixed-breed dogs alike.
Among the 25 most popular purebred dog breeds in the Dog Aging Project, a total of 53 distinct medical conditions were reported by owners as the top health concerns.
