Debunking the Myth: Purebred Dogs Are Not More Susceptible to Health Issues

A recent study conducted by researchers at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and⁤ Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) has⁣ debunked the common belief that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases ⁤compared to mixed-breed dogs.

Dr. Kate Creevy, the chief veterinary officer of the Dog Aging Project and a professor in the VMBS Department of‍ Small Animal Clinical Sciences, emphasized that while ‌certain diseases are associated with specific dog breeds, it is not accurate to generalize⁢ that all purebred dogs are at a higher risk of illness.

The study, which involved surveying over 27,000 dog owners, revealed that common health issues‌ such as ear infections and osteoarthritis affect both purebred and mixed-breed dogs alike.

Among⁢ the 25 most ‌popular purebred dog breeds in the⁣ Dog Aging Project, a total of 53⁢ distinct medical conditions were reported by owners as the top health concerns.
