Speculation about the size of GTA 6’s map has been circulating since 2013, with some outrageous claims suggesting it would encompass the entire continental United States. While that is highly unlikely, GTA 6’s map already appears impressive and could have interesting ties to RDR2’s map.
The first trailer for GTA 6 revealed its setting: Vice City, a recurring location from the fourth mainline game in the series. Vice City is heavily inspired by Miami, and the fictional state it belongs to, Leonida, is based on real-world Florida. Although GTA 6’s map may not be as expansive as the wildest rumors suggest, there is potential for the two games’ settings to intersect.
While it may be a stretch, it is not entirely impossible for GTA 6 and RDR2 to cross paths. GTA 6 primarily takes place in the Vice City/Miami area, firmly rooted in South Florida. However, there are indications that it may expand into the surrounding areas more than the original Vice City did.
Sequels set in the same location often expand their maps, especially when released several console generations later. For example, GTA 5, set in Los Santos like GTA: San Andreas, features a significantly larger map. These two games were released only nine years apart, whereas Vice City and GTA 6 have a 23-year gap. The first GTA 6 trailer also includes clues suggesting that larger parts of Florida, such as the Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys, may be incorporated into the game.
Therefore, the rumor circulating is that GTA 6’s map will encompass the entire state of Leonida/Florida. While this is a more reasonable proposition than the entire continental United States, it is still highly unlikely, and there has been no official confirmation from Rockstar. However, it is possible that a compressed version or a significant portion of the state could be included, bringing it closer to RDR2’s borders. In Red Dead Redemption 2, the state of Lemoyne is based on Louisiana, with its main feature being the city of Saint Denis, a fictionalized version of New Orleans.
