Confirmed Release Window for FF7 Rebirth with Teaser of Surprising Character Demise

The cryptic silence shrouding Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was finally broken at Summer Game Fest 2023 where the game’s release window was officially confirmed alongside a trailer that teased story changes and an unexpected character death. Being the second installment of a three-part series – which reimagines 1997’s original Final Fantasy 7; FF7 Rebirth will continue and expand the story that began in 2020’s FF7 Remake. As it turns out, players won’t have to wait much longer to dive into the upcoming Square Enix RPG and continue their adventure with Cloud.

At Summer Game Fest 2023, which was streamed live on YouTube and Twitch, it was revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s release window is now 2024, moving it past the original Winter 2023 the game previously had.

Although the move may be disappointing, the news comes as a certain relief to many fans, who have been kept in the dark since the reveal of the game in June 2022. FF7 Rebirth wasn’t at the PlayStation showcase in May, which raised some reasonable concerns, given the RPG’s original winter 2023 release window. This was largely attributed to a conflict of interest with Final Fantasy 16, which releases on June 22, with most believing Square Enix was likely holding back on marketing to give the franchise’s newest entry its fair share of time in the spotlight.

After all, FF16 is losing a battle with FF7 Rebirth already, with the latter having an established and loyal fanbase, and with the former featuring new characters and an unfamiliar narrative. The heightened buzz around Rebirth definitely isn’t ideal for Final Fantasy 16’s imminent release, but it’s only natural that eager players would want an additional update after a year of silence. Fortunately, Square Enix delivered on that front today by revealing a trailer that teased story changes, especially related to Tifa. Although the scene in question was a flashback, as anyone who played the original FF7 will know, the voiceover with Sephiroth seemed to be taking place in the present. The subtext, that Tifa will die, was certainly there – and it’s something that’s been rumored since FF7 Remake had its own story changes.
