British Foreign Minister David Cameron has expressed concerns about potential breaches of international law during Israel’s war on Gaza. While he has received advice indicating Israel’s compliance, there are still unanswered questions.
Speaking to the British parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday, Cameron described some of the events he witnessed in the besieged Palestinian territory as “deeply concerning.”
During a question-and-answer session with lawmakers, Cameron acknowledged that Israel could face a potential challenge from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague regarding the proportionality of its actions. He stated that the stance was “close to that.”
Although Cameron did not directly address whether he had received legal advice suggesting Israel’s violation of the law, he acknowledged that certain incidents raised doubts about potential breaches. He stated, “Am I worried that Israel has taken action that might be in breach of international law because this particular premises has been bombed, or whatever? Yes, of course.”
Cameron emphasized that there is always uncertainty regarding whether a specific incident has violated international law, and legal experts would assess and advise him accordingly.
