Aliens: Dark Descent combines top-down real-time strategy and squad-based combat to offer a fresh experience in the extensive lineup of Alien franchise video games. It arrives two years after the 3rd-person squad-based shooter Aliens: Fireteam Elite, which allowed players to face wave after wave of Xenomorphs. Similar to its predecessor, Aliens: Dark Descent captures the essence of the iconic franchise while providing players with an exhilarating experience. The game received positive reviews, although some early bugs were reported, many of which have reportedly been resolved.
One of the most distinctive features of the Alien franchise is its musical identity, initially created by Jerry Goldsmith for Alien and further developed by James Horner and Elliot Goldenthal in subsequent films. For Aliens: Dark Descent, composer Doyle Donehoo aimed to create a score that seamlessly fits within this musical universe. This was also a goal for composer Austin Wintory in Aliens: Fireteam Elite. Donehoo successfully achieved his objective, as the music for Aliens: Dark Descent perfectly complements the atmosphere of the Alien universe, immersing players in its isolating and eerie environments.
Doyle Donehoo recently discussed his experience of working within the Alien universe, his approach to composing the score, and more in an interview with Screen Rant. Please note that this interview has been edited for length and clarity.
