Breaking Oaths: A Guide to Paladin Subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3

Breaking Oaths: A Guide to Paladin Subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3

The recent patch‌ to ⁢ Baldur’s Gate 3, released in early access by Larian Studios, added another ⁢classic Dungeons & Dragons class to the party-based computer RPG – the paladin,‌ a warrior of righteousness who‌ can heal and smite ⁢with the power ⁢of the divine ‌oaths they swear. ‌Larian Studios has tweaked‍ the ⁣rules ‌for the DnD paladin ⁣to fit better the video game mechanics of Baldur’s Gate 3,‍ particularly when it comes to creating fun consequences for players keeping or breaking their character’s sacred oaths.

Of all the classes in Dungeons & Dragons, the‍ paladin is ‌the most thematically and mechanically⁢ aligned ⁤with the archetype of a noble, self-sacrificing hero. The ⁤recruitable companions in⁣ Baldur’s Gate 3, ‍however, are mostly on the more ⁤murky side of ‍the ethical⁢ spectrum – an⁢ amoral vampire spawn, the cleric of an‌ evil⁤ god, a ruthless‍ warrior from a tyrannical theocracy, ⁢etc. How‍ can a⁣ Baldur’s Gate 3‌ paladin player character interact with these ne’er-do-well ⁣NPCs without feeling self-righteous or not ⁢righteous enough?

As of the latest patch⁣ for Baldur’s ‌Gate 3, players who create a paladin can choose between two subclasses during character creation. Each paladin subclass is characterized by their⁢ own, distinct Oaths.

The Oath of Devotion paladin⁤ subclass⁣ in DnD‌ fifth edition‍ embodies the classic fantasy archetype⁣ of ⁤”knight in shining⁢ armor,” bound by a (Lawful Good) vow to protect the innocent, keep their promises, and stand up against evil wherever it is found. Accordingly, Oath of Devotion paladins have feature designed to bolster themselves and their allies in front-line ⁤combat; one such ability, a ⁣Holy Rebuke paladin‌ power exclusive to Baldur’s Gate 3, damages enemies who strike a‍ Devoted paladin’s allies.

The Oath of the Ancients DnD subclass,⁢ comparable to the green ⁤knights of Arthurian mythology, is a more Neutral Good take on the paladin archetype. Oath of the⁤ Ancients paladins vow to protect life, nature, and all the joys of the natural world.⁣ As they⁣ level up, these paladins gain‌ access to⁤ several Dungeons ⁢& Dragons druid spells and abilities, along with ⁢the Baldur’s Gate 3 exclusive feature Healing Radiance, which heals all nearby allies.
