BioWare Veteran Claims Mass Effect and Dragon Age Have Grown “Excessively Alike”

The former developer of BioWare‌ expressed a wish for the studio to better differentiate its⁣ two hit series: Mass Effect ‍and Dragon Age.

In an interview with⁢ Edge magazine, former‍ BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn commented on the two heavyweight RPGs.

We became too similar between Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I would like Dragon‍ Age to be more PC-oriented,⁢ like Neverwinter, while⁢ Mass Effect becomes a true masterpiece of cinematic storytelling.

The studio’s fantasy series undoubtedly began with ⁢the influence of Neverwinter Nights,⁢ but with the introduction⁣ of action in Dragon Age 2 ⁣and MMO quests in Dragon Age: Inquisition, the series, according to common consent, lost some of its uniqueness.

Flynn also recently reminisced about how BioWare developers often started their ⁣careers with modding ⁢Dungeons & Dragons role-playing ‍games, which may explain the⁢ developer’s fondness for Neverwinter Nights. Currently, Flynn is leading the development of the survival game Nightingale.
