Pete Hines from Bethesda responded to a recent post by former World of Warcraft team leader Mark Kern regarding the Starfield loading screen.
Yesterday, Kern published a post discussing the significance of loading screens in revealing aspects of game development and the team’s attitude towards the game. According to Kern, the loading screen of Bethesda’s highly anticipated game, Starfield, could indicate either a rushed development process or a lack of interest.
The loading screen of a game can provide insight into the team’s level of haste and pride in their work. The Starfield loading screen suggests either a team that was enthusiastic and overworked, meeting tight delivery deadlines, or a team that simply didn’t care.
In a subsequent post, Kern mentioned that loading screens are often created towards the end of development. He also noted that teams who are proud of their game tend to revise and improve loading screens just before the game’s release.
However, these comments by Kern did not sit well with Pete Hines, the publishing head at Bethesda. Hines stated that the Starfield loading screen has remained unchanged for many years and was one of the first decisions made by the development team. Furthermore, Hines criticized Kern’s comments as highly unprofessional, coming from another developer.
The loading screen was created exactly as we wanted it, and it has been our menu for many years. It was one of the initial choices we made. Having an opinion is one thing, but questioning the “care” of a developer because you would have done things differently is extremely unprofessional from another “developer”.
What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you appreciate the minimalist main menu?
For those eagerly awaiting Bethesda’s first major role-playing game in years, and who are not bothered by the main menu, Hines recommended watching a documentary film that will help immerse you in the atmosphere of what awaits us in deep space.
