Before beginning the game in Baldur’s Gate 3, it is advisable to deselect a specific option.

In addition‌ to the universal delight that ⁤Baldur’s Gate 3 will soon be out of early access, players are also sharing advice, ⁤including⁤ recommending looking into the game settings and⁤ disabling one potentially unpleasant default option.

The talk is about the ‌so-called karmic dice, which were added in early 2021 and⁣ were then ‌called Loaded Dice or “balanced dice.” This system was ‍supposed ‌to allow for balancing the randomness typical of tabletop role-playing games, which served as the main source⁤ of⁣ inspiration for BG3⁤ and classic role-playing games in general.

Initially, karmic dice simply equalized the ‍player’s rolls. If we rolled low numbers too often, the⁤ game increased our chances of getting good rolls, and vice versa.
However, after complaints from players, the developers quickly changed⁣ this scheme: now ⁣karmic dice always provide the best rolls.

At first glance, this is a useful feature that only the most devoted randomness enthusiasts could find fault with. There is just one small problem: the karmic dice also benefit enemies ‍to a significant extent.

Reddit user Havelok has been reminding us⁤ of this “minor” complication for two weeks now, citing another user’s post, akdavidxy. This user conducted a small experiment with ⁤the⁢ feature. The reason ⁤for it was a “solo” adventure in BG 3, i.e. ‌an attempt to play the game with one character focusing ⁤on defensive play.

The user acknowledges⁤ that his sample ⁤size was modest⁣ (about 150 rolls). Nevertheless, it was enough to clearly see⁣ the negative impact of the karmic die on clashes with enemies. Even with a reasonably high armor value (23) at the beginning of the game, ⁣enemies hit his character in 30-40% of the rolls.
Furthermore, this manifested as a three-fold increase in the ‌enemies’ critical hit⁣ chance: 15% instead of 5%. Additionally, akdavidxy noted that the effect increases with the growth ‍of the armor value. In other words,‍ the higher the armor class, the‍ more ⁤the game favors the enemies.
Of ⁢course, this makes the game more challenging for⁢ tank roles, when ⁣enemies hit your ⁤character too often and deal critical damage. Havelok and akdavidxy⁢ are not the only players who have experienced the curse of the ‌balanced die.

Therefore, it is better to disable⁢ the karmic die before starting the⁤ game. Let’s also hope that Larian ⁢will balance the option better before the release.
