Star Wars Outlaws‘ gameplay was revealed at the June 2023 Ubisoft Forward showcase, and Massive Entertainment’s game looks set to deliver on a feature many fans have hoped for since the canceled Star Wars Battlefront 3. Ubisoft is touting Star Wars Outlaws as “the first fully open-world Star Wars game,” which should provide seamless space exploration as players travel between both iconic and new planets within the Star Wars universe, rather than jumping between hub-type maps like in other titles such as Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel Jedi: Survivor.
Star Wars Outlaws’ story follows a cunning scoundrel, Kay Vess, and her faithful Axolotl companion, Nix, as they attempt one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen to gain her freedom after a bounty is put on her. Kay will have to work with a cast of fellow outlaws from across the five major crime syndicates as she fights for survival and journeys across the galaxy to achieve this goal.
Ground-to-space combat was a feature that was once promised for the original Star Wars Battlefront 3 back in 2006 prior to its sudden cancelation. The idea would have expanded upon the space combat introduced in 2005’s Star Wars Battlefront 2 to make the series’ already pretty sizable battles even greater in scale.
Fans were able to take the ideas seen in leaked gameplay footage and incorporate them into a mod for the original Star Wars Battlefront 2, called Battlefront 3 Legacy, but despite fan demand, this feature had yet to be officially implemented into any game – even EA’s Star Wars Battlefront reboot titles – until Star Wars Outlaws. While the original Battlefront series’ scrapped ground-to-space combat would have enhanced its recreations of major battles from across the movies, this kind of mechanic serves a far different purpose in Kay Vess’ story.
Star Wars Outlaws’ focus on the criminal underground inhabiting the Outer Rim between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi promises a new kind of adventure to that of previous Star Wars games. With Kay and Nix on the run throughout the upcoming game’s campaign, a seamless ground-to-space mechanic makes perfect sense, particularly when combined with the game’s Grand Theft Auto-esque “Wanted” system. Much like GTA’s police chases, Star Wars Outlaws can keep its momentum during intense pursuits across the Galaxy as Kay attempts to escape the clutches of the Empire or any syndicate she may have angered, keeping players on high alert no matter where in the game they are.
