AnitaB.org has unveiled new initiatives to prevent a recurrence of the issues faced at last year’s Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC).
The annual event by the nonprofit organization, dedicated to empowering women and nonbinary individuals in the tech industry, pays tribute to computing pioneer Rear Admiral Grace Hopper. It features conference sessions, an expo, and a job fair.
During GHC 2023, the job fair saw an influx of men, some of whom misrepresented their gender identity during registration. These individuals monopolized recruiters from major tech companies, disrupting the process for the intended attendees and causing incidents of physical aggression, disrespect, and sexual harassment.

Bo Young Lee, president of AnitaB.org advisory, described GHC 23 as a tale of two experiences. While many attendees engaged in sessions and talks with joy and a sense of community, a different scenario unfolded in the Expo Hall. A small group of attendees, primarily students and male, displayed aggressive behavior that violated the event’s code of conduct.
