Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, a brand-new expansion, has officially been announced. This will be the fifth expansion for the critically-acclaimed MMO, which most recently concluded its decade-long Hydaelyn-Zodiark plot with the Endwalker expansion. Producer-director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida confirmed the existence of Dawntrail during his keynote speech at the US FFXIV Fan Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. He expressed his gratitude to players who have stuck with the game throughout its ten years, and stated his intention to continue expanding on the world of FFXIV for the rest of his life.
While Yoshida understandably kept mum about the finer details of the expansion, which seems to be in the early days of development, he was able to reveal a select few tidbits about its broader strokes. Dawntrail isn’t just a new chapter of FFXIV’s story, a couple of new jobs, and a series of new dungeons – while it does include all those things, it also brings major, system-wide upgrades to the MMO. Dawntrail is no run-of-the-mill expansion, either; it’s best seen as the start of a brand-new chapter in the FFXIV saga.
FFXIV: Dawntrail’s release window is set for summer 2024. While Yoshi-P commented that the team wanted the expansion to be available as early in the summer as possible, he was reluctant to commit to a specific date so early in the process. Therefore, impatient players will have to make due with the vague summer 2024 window for now.
FFXIV: Dawntrail will take players across the Indigo Deep to a wholly new continent: Tural, located just southwest of the starting area of Eorzea. Tural is a diverse, lush region, full of varied cultures and gorgeous jungle vistas. It all centers on a brand-new hub city: Tuliyollal. Tuliyollal boasts a bustling port, a lively market, and a system of dirigible transportation. Although well-connected, Tuliyollal is not as industrialized as FFXIV’s other major cities - its people prioritize living with the land and connection with nature. It’s also the seat of Tural’s government, which is ruled over by a wise, two-headed Mamool Ja named Gulool Ja Ja - at least for now.
FFXIV: Dawntrail will also feature a dense forest area called Yak T’el, which is only accessible via dirigible from the capital city. Beneath its thick branches, players will also find settlements of Hrothgar and Mamool Ja, as well as glimmering water features like cenotes. The expansion will also feature a mountainous region called Urqopacha, dotted with the ruins of a giant society that mysteriously vanished a millennium ago. Urqopacha is home to a new Allied Tribe, the Pelupelu – skilled traders who are scarcely seen without their ubiquitous masks.
