Jailed Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny has been located in a prison north of the Arctic Circle, according to his spokeswoman, after supporters lost contact with him for over two weeks.
On Monday, Kira Yarmysh stated that Navalny is in the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, located in the Yamal-Nenets region, approximately 1,900km (1,200 miles) northeast of Moscow.
Navalny’s lawyer was able to visit him on Monday, confirming that he is doing well, Yarmysh added.
Since December 6, the whereabouts of the Kremlin critic had been unknown, causing concern among his allies, human rights organizations, and Western governments.
There were speculations that he was being transferred to another prison, a process that can take weeks in Russia as prisoners are gradually moved by rail between distant facilities.
Preparations were being made for his anticipated transfer to a “special regime” colony, which is the most severe category in Russia’s prison system.
