Alexey Navalny, Kremlin critic, found in Arctic prison after weeks of no contact

Jailed Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny has been located in a prison north of the Arctic Circle, according to his spokeswoman, after ⁣supporters lost‍ contact with him for over two weeks.

On Monday, Kira Yarmysh stated that Navalny⁢ is in the IK-3 ‌penal colony ​in Kharp, located in the Yamal-Nenets region, approximately 1,900km (1,200 miles) ⁢northeast of Moscow.

Navalny’s lawyer was able to visit him on⁢ Monday, confirming that he is⁢ doing well, Yarmysh⁣ added.

Since‍ December 6, the whereabouts of the ⁣Kremlin⁤ critic had been unknown, causing concern among his allies, human rights organizations, and‌ Western governments.

There were speculations that he ‌was being transferred to another prison, a process that can take weeks in ⁢Russia as‌ prisoners are gradually moved by rail between distant facilities.

Preparations were being made for his anticipated transfer to a “special regime” colony, which is the most severe category ‌in Russia’s ​prison system.
