A groundbreaking installment in its own series and open-world adventure games in general, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom brings a number of new features to the table, but one of its biggest new ideas turned out to be its biggest letdown. TOTK brings a number of series firsts to Zelda, including new building abilities for Link, unique enemy types, a vast system of loot-filled underground caves, and some shiny new Zonai Devices for players to slap together. While some of its new features have been praised for taking the series in a bold new direction, others just don’t make sense.
TOTK is in every sense of the word a sequel to Breath of the Wild, and it shows. In many ways, it builds on the success of its predecessor, reusing its game engine, maps, and many of its models. It does a fair job of expanding on what it borrows, putting new twists on familiar locations, characters, and puzzles. However, some of its new additions simply fall short of the mark. From half-solutions to BOTW’s most glaring flaws to good concepts taken too far, TOTK doesn’t always deliver on its promises. And one of its most promising new features happened to become its greatest disappointment.
Getting between sky islands can be a hassle in TOTK. They tend to be spaced very far apart, requiring multiple rockets or repeated blasts from the Vow of Tulin to travel between them. Sometimes, the puzzles that players must solve to travel between sky islands are the best thing about them, but that only makes it even more disappointing when the reward is another empty area. In fact, getting to the next sky island often takes more time than exploring it, making the whole thing feel like a chore. It’s just another thing to check off the list when passing through a new region of TOTK’s map.

The only real reason to travel to the sky islands in TOTK is for the Sage’s Wills. These items are used, like Lights of Blessing in groups of fours, to upgrade the Sages’ Vow abilities that Link collects throughout the game. They’re the only item on the sky islands that players can’t actually find anywhere else, and they rarely require any kind of special effort on the player’s part; they’re simply found in chests, or given as rewards for generic boss battles or repetitive puzzles.
