Although playing through the missions of Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon makes for mostly straightforward progression, the game’s multiple endings can be a bit puzzling for the uninitiated. Marking the series’ long-awaited return, over ten years after its previous entry in 2012, Armored Core 6 is a large departure from recent FromSoftware’s games – especially the massive hit, Elden Ring. What will be familiar to those familiar with Souls games, however, are the different possible ways for the game’s story to end – although, given the mission-based structure of Armored Core, the conditions to meet for specific endings aren’t nearly as obscure.
Like most past games in the series, Armored Core 6 follows a mission-based structure, with a menu of available missions to play. Completing all available missions moves the story forward and grants access to new missions. Occasionally, however, instead of being able to complete every available mission, there will be a few options available. In this case, choosing one mission will render the others unavailable on the current playthrough, and choices will determine story events and how future missions will play out. These branching missions grant access to the different endings, and it’s necessary to play Armored Core 6 after beating it to get every ending.
Armored Core 6 has three different endings, each with a corresponding title – “The Fires of Raven,” “Liberator of Rubicon,” and “Alea lacta Est.” The ending received is based mainly on a late-game split-path option between a selection of missions, and each leads to a drastically different mission and a final boss fight. The choice comes after the ”Escape” mission and gives a choice whether to side with “Cinder” Carla to destroy the Coral or to side with Ayre and preserve it, with each path going with or against Handler Walter’s wishes. A third path leading to ”Alea lacta Est” becomes available on the third consecutive playthrough.

On an initial playthrough, the choice that determines which ending is achieved is based on two missions called “Intercept the Corporate Forces” and “Eliminate ‘Cinder’ Carla.” Choosing “Intercept the Corporate Forces” has the pilot side with Carla in accordance with the wishes of Handler Walter and leads to the ending “The Fires of Raven.” In this path, the colony ship Xylem is protected from Arquebus forces, keeping it safe until it crashes into Arquebus’s Vascular Plant. This sets off a cataclysmic event in order to prevent an event known as the Collapse – which Walter and Carla believe would lead to the Coral contaminating all of humanity.
