The Batman Arkham franchise is widely regarded as the best game adaptation of comics. 14 years ago, Rocksteady Studios embarked on an incredible journey with rich storytelling and captivating combat by creating the game Batman Arkham Asylum.
Rocksteady Studios set a new standard for superhero games, and even today, this game remains exceptional for Batman fans.
Right from the beginning, Batman Arkham Asylum establishes a dark and serious tone. The game starts with Batman apprehending the Joker and bringing him to Arkham. However, the situation quickly deteriorates when the Joker escapes and takes over the asylum.
At this point, players are given the opportunity to experiment with Batman’s combat abilities. Rocksteady Studios developed a combat system centered around counters, which later served as inspiration for several games in other franchises.
In subsequent games, new abilities were introduced to expand upon this combat system, but much of its success can be attributed to the impressive foundation laid by Batman Arkham Asylum.
Eventually, Batman Arkham Asylum opens up, allowing players to explore the surroundings of the asylum. The game world may be smaller than its predecessors, but this compactness allowed Rocksteady Studios to focus on intricate and detailed level design.
After its remaster release in 2016, Batman Arkham Asylum became available on almost all modern consoles and PCs, often at a discounted price during sales. The game will also be released on Nintendo Switch on October 13.
Currently, Rocksteady Studios is busy working on the game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is expected to be released in 2024 after numerous delays. Unfortunately, this game will mark Kevin Conroy’s final performance as Batman following his death.
