10 Amusing Methods Video Games Use to Penalize Cheating

Video game developers are generally not fond of players cheating in their games, especially those who cheat the system by getting pirated copies of titles, and measures have been taken in some of the biggest franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Grand Theft Auto to prevent it. Ever since the beginning of video games, there have been people trying to get around the rules, and many developers have instituted in-game systems to fight back against their rogue player base. Video game cheats come in many forms, and the responses from developers can be pretty entertaining.

Video game companies have tried various ways to put an end to cheating, including calling out cheaters in videos, using humiliation tactics, and crashing games. Despite everything, some players still try to see what they can get away with. Throughout the years, developers have come up with some pretty funny methods of putting a stop to it for individual games at least, and here are a few of the best examples so far.

Both the original and remastered versions of Link’s Awakening included a sneaky punishment for Link if players chose to take advantage of things and steal from a shopkeeper. If players choose to shoplift, throughout the rest of the game the NPCs reference Link as “THIEF” in place of his name, and if players return to the shop they are met with a shocking surprise. The store owner greets Link with an attack of his own that shoots a lightning laser beam that instantly kills Link.

The original SimCity game had a cheat code where players could type FUND to get ten thousand dollars added to the city’s bank account. Doing this once or twice didn’t have any consequences, however, after the player used FUND one too many times their city was destroyed by a massive earthquake. Later, in SimCity 2000, developers still allowed FUND to be utilized, but it would provide the ten grand as a loan with 25% interest rather than a lovely gift.

Once again, Zelda makes the list with an example of how Nintendo chose to punish N64 players who pirated Ocarina of Time with several little changes to the game. First, was a funny alteration to Princess Zelda’s appearance by taking a pivotal moment in the game and giving Zelda a hairstyle that is absolutely ridiculous. Next, a fishing challenge Link tries to do was made impossible by all the fish immediately letting go. If players continue to play the pirated version, they then are ultimately met with Link becoming trapped in Ganon’s Castle, making it so the game can’t be completed, at least not without going and purchasing an official copy instead.
