An overlooked feature from the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is finally getting its time in the spotlight thanks to a new indie game for Switch and PC. Originally released in 1993 on the Game Boy, Link’s Awakening is a charmingly quirky entry in the Zelda series and one of the most unique 2D titles. Its remake, released for the Switch in 2019, retained the top-down perspective but featured all-new 3D graphics. The Link’s Awakening remake was widely praised for its adorable, toy-like visuals and is generally considered a welcome update to an already fantastic game.
However, the Link’s Awakening remake did more than just update the graphics and gameplay – it also introduced a new feature. The Dungeon Maker in the Link’s Awakening remake seemed to offer players the chance to create their own levels in a concept similar to the Mario Maker series. Unfortunately, this idea never fully materialized. The Dungeon Maker mechanic is limited, as players can only use rooms collected from the main story dungeons they’ve cleared, making it impossible to design their own rooms and puzzles. Additionally, dungeons cannot be published online and can only be shared in person by storing their data in a compatible Amiibo, which is sold separately. Instead, the Link’s Awakening Dungeon Maker is designed as more of a single-player experience, with a series of challenges provided by the gravedigger Dampé. Super Dungeon Maker, on the other hand, is far more customizable, allowing players to control even minor details in the dungeon-building process, and sharing dungeons online is easy and free.
While many players hoped that the Dungeon Maker feature of Link’s Awakening would be Zelda’s answer to the Mario Maker series, its limited customization and lack of online features held it back from delivering on that promise. Super Dungeon Maker, however, has taken on a similar task and surpasses Link’s Awakening in every possible way. Now available on Switch and PC, Super Dungeon Maker is the perfect alternative for players who want to build and share their own dungeons but were disappointed by the limitations of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
