Zarema Musaeva’s Health Declines in Detention: Lawyer Reveals Increased Insulin Dosage and Reliance on Painkillers

Zarema Musayeva’s health is deteriorating⁢ while she serves time in a ⁤penal colony settlement ‌on false charges of assaulting a law enforcement officer. Recent medical examinations have led to an increase in her ‌insulin dosage, as reported by lawyer Alexander Savin to the “Team against Torture.”

Musayeva herself shared with her lawyer that she struggles to sleep due to intense leg pain and now relies on painkillers. She⁢ also mentioned a sudden decline ‍in her vision,⁢ with doctors diagnosing cataracts. “We have received an interim report from the medical‍ commission outlining Zarema’s conditions. However,‌ the commission has delayed final diagnoses. We anticipate a decision on potential release⁤ for health⁢ reasons by the end of April,” stated Savin.

In December 2023, Musayeva’s defense filed a request for her release on medical grounds at the Shali City Court. According‌ to the Supreme Court’s Plenum Resolution, an immediate medical evaluation should have been conducted and shared with the court, but this ‌has not yet occurred.

Zarema Musayeva, the⁣ wife of retired federal judge Saidi Yangulbayev and mother of ⁢human ⁣rights activists Abubakar and Ibrahim Yangulbayev, who have criticized Ramzan Kadyrov, has been in detention since January 2022. She received a sentence of 4 years and 9 months in a penal colony settlement. “Memorial” has recognized ‍Musayeva as a⁢ political prisoner.
