World Bank’s newly appointed leader urges employees to intensify efforts towards development.

Ajay Banga, the new president of the World Bank, has urged the bank’s 16,000-strong workforce to increase their efforts in development and climate change as he seeks to accelerate the bank’s evolution to tackle the world’s most pressing problems.

In a memo seen by Reuters on his first day in the job on Friday, the former CEO of Mastercard said he would recruit each staff member to work towards his vision of “creating a world free from poverty on a livable planet.”

Banga wrote, “Making good on our ambition will require us to evolve to maximise resources and write a new playbook, to think creatively, take informed risks and forge new partnerships with civil society and multilateral institutions.”

He also highlighted the need for the bank to become more efficient, reducing the approval time for financing projects, which can currently take up to three years.

Banga met with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Thursday, who urged him to “get the most out of the bank’s balance sheet” and mobilise more private capital.
