Witchbrook Devs Give Update on Game's Development

Witchbrook developer Chucklefish has provided an update regarding the witch-training sim game’s ongoing creation. Excitement for Witchbrook was immediate upon the game’s official announcement in 2018, but updates on the game have been incredibly rare since. The latest update from Chucklefish is unlikely to sate fans’ excitement for news, but confirmation that Witchbrook remains in active development should be enough to keep fans looking forward to the game’s eventual release.

The development of Witchbrook has been known for a very long time. After Chucklefish published Stardew Valley in 2016 and the game became a staggering success, Chucklefish shifted the resources it had dedicated to the project to something new – Project Spellbound. Even having been in development since around 2017, Chucklefish is giving Witchbrook the time it needs to ensure the project is successful. Plus, with Chucklefish’s other focuses, like the development of Wargroove and its DLC, as well as publishing over half a dozen other titles between 2018 and 2022, it’s a lot of work.

While some may have feared Chucklefish had shelved Witchbrook due to other priorities, the development team has now made clear there’s no need to worry. Witchbrook remains in active development, “full steam ahead!” Chucklefish says that its in-house development team in London is still working full time putting together the charming world of Witchbrook. There are no updates on Witchbrook’s release timeline, but Chucklefish is working to make the game the best it can be.

Answering fans’ question regarding why Witchbrook is taking quite a bit of time, Chucklefish notes that it’s a zero-crunch studio and is proud of that. It believes that developers who are “healthy and well-rested” make better games. That may mean that development will take longer, but Chucklefish trusts it’s for the better. That team of only around 18 people likely helps explain the situation, too, especially given Chucklefish’s past controversy regarding not paying workers.

As painful as the wait continues to be for Witchbrook, Chucklefish’s update should hopefully cheer interested fans up. Not only is Witchbrook still being worked on, but Chucklefish is hopefully indicating that it plans to be more communicative in 2023. New screenshots, or even a trailer, would be great to see. Still, Chucklefish has disappeared for years before, so only time will tell when the next update for Witchbrook will be delivered.
