Ways to Overcome Despair in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players must overcome a dangerous condition called Gloom that slowly drains their health, reducing their hearts over time. This unique damage must be resisted before traveling to The Depths, a dark underground region in the game. Fortunately, players have multiple methods to discover that might overcome Gloom.

The easiest way to avoid Gloom damage entirely is to leave The Depths quickly by fast traveling. Any area within the massive map of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that causes Gloom only does so to those actively walking inside it; the condition ends the moment players leave. Depending on whether players have upgraded their health through collected hearts or not, being able to leave The Depths fast can prevent a needless death.

The quest that takes players down into the depths, known as Camera Work in the Depths, teaches players how to use Lightroot to resist the effects of Gloom. Players can see how badly Gloom has affected them by tracking the broken gray heart icons slowly taking over their health. When players activate a Lightroot, it casts a wide area of light that cures all Gloom effects to anything within range.

Lightroots also act as fast travel points in The Depths, which helps players explore and find glowing blue wisps called Poes scattered throughout the region. Poes are traded at Bargainer Statues for Dark Clumps, meal ingredient items that may be used to cook food with Gloom resistance. A similar consumable found on Sky Islands named Sundelions also restores the health Link loses to Gloom.

The other methods players may use to overcome Gloom are to take a skeletal horse in The Depths or find Armor with Gloom Resistance. Taming these creatures is done the same way as befriending others on the surface, letting players never encounter Gloom while on the back of these horses. Armors are also sold from Bargainer Statues that resist Gloom naturally, making it best to defend against enemies that inflict the condition.
