Humans produce approximately 4.4 billion tons of concrete every year. This process consumes about 8 billion tons of sand (out of the total annual usage of 40-50 billion tons), leading to a shortage of this building material in recent years. Interestingly, during the same time frame, we generate around 10 billion kilograms of used coffee grounds. Researchers from RMIT University in Australia have discovered that these coffee grounds can be used as a substitute for silica in the concrete production process. When used in the right proportions, this substitution results in a significantly stronger chemical bond compared to using sand alone.
“The disposal of organic waste poses an environmental challenge as it emits large amounts of greenhouse gases, including methane and carbon dioxide, which contribute to climate change,” said Dr. Rajeev Roychand, the lead author of the study from RMIT’s School of Engineering.
