Rauf Mirqadirov, a prominent Azerbaijani political analyst and former political prisoner residing in Switzerland, shared his insights with The Insider predicting that the West could impose sanctions on Azerbaijan if it aligns closely with Russia.
“The imposition of sanctions on our officials, including high-ranking figures, should have happened much earlier. However, the likelihood of this occurring is uncertain. Sanctions may only materialize if Azerbaijan completely aligns itself with Russia and advances Russia’s foreign policy objectives. Democracy and freedom of speech in Azerbaijan were extinguished a decade ago. A similar proposal was deliberated in the U.S. Congress towards the end of 2015. During that period, I was incarcerated and undergoing trial. I was aware of the discussions on sanctions, which had unintended repercussions: there were plans to release 15 individuals for the New Year festivities (reminiscent of Soviet practices). Yet, our president’s ire led to a postponement of the release until spring.”
