Star Wars Jedi: Survivor offers a variety of lightsaber stances for Cal Kestis to use in combat, but one in particular can make him seriously overpowered. Respawn Entertainment, the developer, has significantly improved the combat from the previous title, Jedi: Fallen Order, which was already praised for its challenging-yet-fulfilling lightsaber gameplay inspired by titles such as Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, rather than the hack-and-slash of some previous Star Wars titles.
Jedi: Survivor has five distinct styles of lightsaber combat, which can be used to take on specific enemy types or situations, similar to the katana combat of Ghost of Tsushima. These include the single-bladed, double-bladed, and dual-wield lightsaber forms seen in Jedi: Fallen Order, but also include two new additions: crossguard and blaster. These stances can be upgraded via skill trees over the course of the game, with some making Cal one of the most skilled Jedi, being incredibly versatile and somewhat overpowered when maxed out.
The most overpowered lightsaber stance in Jedi: Survivor is the blaster, which is the form of combat least associated with the Jedi way. Blasters are more commonly associated with Lando, Han, or Poe, and although Luke Skywalker has been seen to use one on several occasions throughout the original trilogy, it was rare for Knights of the Jedi Order to use them, with Obi-Wan Kenobi deeming them to be “clumsy or random” when compared to the “elegant” lightsaber. However, upon unlocking it after reaching Jedha, Cal proves that the blaster can be extremely efficient in the right hands.
The versatility in how Cal’s blaster can be used is one of the reasons it’s so overpowered. While the blaster starts off weaker than a regular melee attack with a lightsaber and has the downside of a limited clip that needs to be recharged with melee attacks, this can be upgraded with the Improved Clip perk, and it can ultimately become one of the best weapons in the game if players choose to max out its skill tree path.
The most common use for the blaster is to reduce an enemy’s guard and then finish them with the lightsaber, however, players can use it for so many more tactics. The Quick Draw perk gives players the ability to slow down time and target enemies and is similar to Red Dead Redemption’s Dead Eye mechanic, which can dispatch multiple targets at once to clear entire battles with ease to make many fights against groups of droids or stormtroopers somewhat trivial. The blaster’s charged shot is particularly useful for general ranged use, as it can wipe out lower-level foes, and quickly stagger larger enemies. With these boss-type enemies, the blaster can also be used to chip away at their health without getting within range of their attacks.
