Dungeons & Dragons is a dynamic game that evolves over time, including the essential Player’s Handbook. From its origins as basic DnD to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons and subsequent editions, the game has continuously evolved. The most recent edition, 5e, was released in 2014 after extensive playtesting as D&D Next.
Fast forward to 2024, and Dungeons & Dragons 5e is set to receive an update in honor of the RPG’s 50th anniversary. The playtesting for this update, codenamed One D&D, began in 2022. The first book to be updated in 2024 will be the Player’s Handbook (PHB), followed by a new Monster Manual and Dungeon Masters Guide.
It is speculated that the 2024 Player’s Handbook may be launched on May 21, 2024. Although tentative dates for all 2024 DnD books were briefly revealed during PAX Unplugged in late 2023, the official release date for the 2024 Player’s Handbook remains unknown and subject to change. What is certain is that the Player’s Handbook is the first of the core rulebooks scheduled for release.
Wizards of the Coast’s online store currently offers the 2014 digital/physical bundle for $59.95, and the 2024 update is expected to be priced similarly. A D&D Beyond version of the rulebook will likely be available, priced around $29.95 for consistency. Additionally, virtual tabletop platforms like Roll20 are expected to have the new 2024 Player’s Handbook adapted and for sale at a comparable price to the current version.
The 2024 PHB will contain the same essential information as previous editions, including character classes, spells, abilities, items, combat rules, and races (referred to as species in the 2024 edition, according to One D&D playtest packets). As always, the Player’s Handbook will be an indispensable resource at the gaming table.
