The Kishinev District Court has made a bold decision by declaring the black-yellow-white tricolor of the Russian Empire as an extremist symbol. This ruling, which has caused quite a stir, can be found on the official website of the judicial authorities.
Historically, the black-yellow-white flag served as the official emblem of the Russian Empire during a significant period in its history. Referred to as the “flag of the Romanov colors” and the “coat of arms flag of the Russian Empire,” this tricolor combination dates back to the early 18th century. Originally seen on Peter I’s naval standard, it symbolized the monarch’s presence on military vessels. Today, advocates for this flag are primarily modern monarchists and Russian nationalists, spanning from moderate to radical beliefs.
In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Moldova has taken a stand by prohibiting symbols such as the St. George ribbon, as well as the letters Z and V, which are seen as promoting war. Those found in violation of this law in the republic may face penalties ranging from fines to compulsory labor for up to 60 hours.
