The UK’s Electoral Commission has disclosed that approximately 40 million voters had their personal information exposed for over a year. The agency, responsible for regulating party and election finance as well as elections in the country, stated that it fell victim to a “complex cyberattack.” Although suspicious activity was initially detected on its network in October 2022, the intruders had gained access to its systems as early as August 2021.
The perpetrators managed to infiltrate the Electoral Commission’s servers, which hosted the agency’s email and control systems, as well as copies of the electoral registers. Fortunately, details of donations and loans to registered political parties and non-party campaigners remained unaffected as they are stored on a separate system. It is important to note that the agency does not retain information on anonymous voters or the addresses of overseas electors registered outside of the UK.
