TSMC’s Second Arizona Chip Foundry Faces Delay

The ‌largest semiconductor manufacturer ⁤in the world, ⁤TSMC, has announced that it ‍will delay ⁣the opening of its second US-based⁢ foundry. The first foundry, ⁢announced in ⁣2020, ‌has already ‍been delayed past its initial ⁤opening date ‍of late 2024 due ⁤to labor⁤ disputes and workforce development programs. The‍ second foundry, designed to produce advanced chips using a 3nm process, is now uncertain in terms of its ‌process and production. TSMC has pushed back the opening to⁤ 2027 or 2028, representing a $40 billion direct investment. The delay is attributed to the CHIPS and Science ‌Act, which promised ‌substantial grants to chipmakers in exchange for‌ locating semiconductor ⁣manufacturing⁤ capacity in the‌ US. TSMC is waiting to ensure that the‍ application is awarded to them for the facilities in Arizona. The‌ eventual opening of⁢ the⁤ Arizona foundries will advance the ⁣state ‍of domestic silicon manufacturing substantially, given that TSMC has made the most⁤ technological advancements⁢ in⁣ the sector.
