The largest semiconductor manufacturer in the world, TSMC, has announced that it will delay the opening of its second US-based foundry. The first foundry, announced in 2020, has already been delayed past its initial opening date of late 2024 due to labor disputes and workforce development programs. The second foundry, designed to produce advanced chips using a 3nm process, is now uncertain in terms of its process and production. TSMC has pushed back the opening to 2027 or 2028, representing a $40 billion direct investment. The delay is attributed to the CHIPS and Science Act, which promised substantial grants to chipmakers in exchange for locating semiconductor manufacturing capacity in the US. TSMC is waiting to ensure that the application is awarded to them for the facilities in Arizona. The eventual opening of the Arizona foundries will advance the state of domestic silicon manufacturing substantially, given that TSMC has made the most technological advancements in the sector.
