Reports from the Israel Defense Forces radio – “Galey Tzahal” – indicate that Israeli and Egyptian troops clashed in Rafah, raising concerns of escalating tensions between the two nations, as noted by Bloomberg.
The IDF confirmed a “shooting incident” along the Egyptian border but did not disclose further details, stating that investigations are ongoing and negotiations with Egypt are in progress. According to army radio, Egyptian forces opened fire on Israeli soldiers at the Rafah border crossing connecting the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
Israeli forces initiated an operation near Rafah in early May, citing the presence of thousands of Hamas militants in the area. On May 24, the International Court of Justice in The Hague issued a ruling demanding Israel to halt its military activities in Rafah immediately, citing potential harm to civilians. This decision came following a case filed by South Africa against Israel, accusing the country of committing acts of genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
