The Georgia Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed a petition from former United States President Donald Trump, which aimed to halt an inquiry into potential election interference during the 2020 race.
In a five-page opinion released on Monday, the state court rejected Trump’s claim that his constitutional rights had been violated.
This decision was notably swift, coming just three days after Trump’s legal team filed the petition on Friday to prevent Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from pressing charges against him.
Since 2021, Willis has been investigating Trump over allegations that he attempted to overturn Georgia’s presidential election results, which showed him narrowly losing to Democrat Joe Biden in the state.
In addition to seeking to limit Willis’s prosecutorial powers, Friday’s petition also aimed to suppress a special grand jury report from the ongoing investigation, which has not yet been fully released.
This request was also denied in Monday’s decision.
