Trump’s attempt to scuttle election probe in Georgia court dismissed

The⁢ Georgia ‌Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed a⁣ petition from former United States⁤ President Donald Trump,⁣ which aimed‍ to halt an inquiry into potential ⁤election ⁣interference ⁢during‌ the 2020 race.

In a ‍five-page ⁣opinion released on Monday, the ⁢state court ⁣rejected Trump’s‌ claim ⁣that ‍his constitutional⁤ rights ⁢had been violated.

This decision was notably swift, coming⁤ just ⁢three days after Trump’s legal ⁢team filed the petition on Friday to prevent ‍Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis ⁤from pressing charges against him.

Since 2021,‍ Willis has been investigating Trump over allegations that⁣ he attempted to⁤ overturn‌ Georgia’s‌ presidential ‍election results, ‍which showed him narrowly losing to Democrat ‍Joe Biden‍ in ‌the ⁣state.

In ⁣addition to ⁤seeking⁣ to⁣ limit Willis’s prosecutorial powers, Friday’s petition also aimed to suppress a special‍ grand jury ⁤report from the ongoing investigation, which has not yet ⁢been fully released.

This request was also denied in Monday’s decision.
