With Gen 10 of Pokémon approaching, players may be beginning to ask themselves where the franchise can go next in terms of a region. While it was originally speculated a return to Japan may be in the cards, that is now unlikely given that Scarlet and Violet DLC already appears to be doing so and Legends: Arceus was inspired by Japan, too. It may seem like there’s nothing left but rest assured that there are still plenty of unique options left for Gen 10 that would feel brand new and be the perfect spot for some new Pokémon to make their debut.
Though there are plenty of beautiful places left in the world yet to be used by Pokémon, it’s important that each generation feels unique or at least provides some distance from the more recent locations it’s similar to. For example, given that Scarlet and Violet were inspired by Spain, it’s unlikely that Gen 10 would use anything that has a similar feel to that and instead would save that location to be used later on.
Moving on to Gen 6, Pokémon X and Y continued expanding the world of Pokémon to this time include France, even going as far as to have a Paris-themed area with a Gym resembling the Eiffel Tower. By Gen 7, it was clear that the new regions were not only a hit as they added an exciting uniqueness to every game’s ambiance, but that they allowed for different regions of the world to be represented through Pokémon of their very own. So the next stop was Hawaii. A nice tropical location that even allowed Sun and Moon to introduce regional variants to Pokémon games which gave players new takes on some of their favorite Pokémon.
Heading into Gen 8, the trend continued of introducing regional variant Pokémon alongside new ones, this time in Europe again as Sword and Shield used various regions of the UK for both its base game and DLC. Finally getting into Gen 9 with Scarlet and Violet, as previously stated, the home region closely resembles Spain, another area of Europe. Players must also not forget that there are a couple of non-mainline series games like Pokémon Colosseum or Pokémon Snap that also have unique regions too, such as Southwest US and the Galápagos Islands. However, then there are also games like Detective Pikachu that are in no known region of Pokémon, so the idea of creating an entirely new region based on no specific place is a possibility as well.
There are plenty of remaining options left for Pokémon Gen 10. Though it’s unlikely the developers, nor players, want anything that feels too similar to things they’ve already done, there are still unique regions left to explore. Not only that, but a new region does not have to focus so much on where, instead, Pokémon could design a region based on a specific time. This idea has already been explored some in Scarlet and Violet with an emphasis on the past and future, but this could be explored further such as basing an entire game on a specific point in history, giving already used regions more flexibility. Until…
