When it comes to Dungeons & Dragons, most adventures take place on the Material Plane, but there are countless other Planes of Existence to explore. Some are more treacherous than others, while others are simply unfathomable. For DMs looking to challenge their players and upend their understanding of reality, sending them to another Plane can be an excellent way to do so, whether for a one-shot or a long-term campaign.
In DnD, the Planes are divided into various areas, as outlined in the Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide. The Material Plane is the primary planet where most adventures take place, with nearby echo Planes. Beyond that, there are the Inner Planes, which represent elemental chaos, and the Outer Planes, which correspond to traditional DnD character alignments. With so many options to choose from, DMs may feel overwhelmed, so here are some of the most bizarre and mind-bending Planes of Existence that DnD has to offer.
One of the most entertaining aspects of Arborea is the Bacchae, which DMs can use to great effect. These 24-hour party people travel around Arborea, luring travelers into an endless night of drinking, dancing, and fighting. If fending off hedonistic satyrs isn’t enough, DMs should also keep in mind the many hostile spirits that inhabit every glade and stream in Arborea.
Players may struggle to navigate a Plane of intense emotions, and lawful characters may find themselves at odds with the people of Arborea. A visit to Arborea will leave all players affected by the Plane to such an extent that DMs can implement the optional rule: Intense Yearning. This would cause any character who visited Arborea to miss it so much that they would have disadvantage on ability checks.
The Elemental Plane of Earth in the Inner Planes is a realm of stone, metals, and precious gems. As with all the Inner Planes, the elements are present in their purest state here, which means rigidity and age-old traditions for the Plane of Earth. The lands of the Plane of Earth are impossibly tall mountains and labyrinths of caves and tunnels beneath.
