Imran Khan, Pakistan’s former prime minister and main opposition leader, has been sentenced to three years in prison for “corrupt practices” related to gifts he received while in office. He has also been banned from participating in politics for five years. Khan alleges that the charges against him are fabricated by his adversaries. Protests against his arrest have been subdued due to a crackdown on his supporters led by the military over the past three months.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of India’s opposition Congress party, has returned to parliament after the country’s Supreme Court suspended his conviction for defamation. Gandhi was found guilty in March in a case he believes is politically motivated. The Supreme Court stated that the court that convicted Gandhi failed to provide an explanation for imposing the maximum sentence of two years in prison, which resulted in his disqualification from parliament.
A report by UN investigators reveals that Myanmar’s armed forces have escalated their “widespread and systematic attacks against civilians,” including indiscriminate bombing campaigns and the burning of villages. The investigators are compiling evidence to hold “individual perpetrators” accountable for war crimes.
