Israel has announced that its soldiers are operating in the “heart” of Gaza city, where they believe Hamas’s underground headquarters are located. Yoav Gallant, Israel’s defence minister, stated that Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas in Gaza, has been isolated in his bunker (although he did not disclose its location). Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, declared that Israel will be responsible for Gaza’s security indefinitely after the war.
The following day, Antony Blinken, America’s secretary of state, expressed his view that after the war, Gaza and the West Bank should be unified under the control of the Palestinian Authority (PA). Mr. Blinken attempted to persuade Mr. Netanyahu to agree to a humanitarian pause. The American diplomat also met with Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the PA, who demanded an immediate ceasefire. American warplanes targeted a weapons depot in Syria that is used by Iran.
According to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, over 10,500 Palestinians, including 4,300 children, have been killed in the month-long war. Civilians are continuing to flee from the northern part of the enclave, where the fighting is most intense.
