Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of​ America’s House of Representatives, has been ousted from his position⁣ for the first time in history. The⁣ move ⁤was initiated by ‍Matt Gaetz, a far-right congressman, ​after McCarthy ⁢passed a last-minute bill with Democratic support to avoid ⁢a⁢ government shutdown (the​ bill only keeps ⁣the ‍government functioning until ⁤November 17th). Gaetz accused McCarthy of selling out, leading to a vote where a few rebellious Republicans joined the Democrats in firing him.

Gavin Newsom, ⁢the governor of California, has appointed⁤ Laphonza ⁤Butler to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the death of‌ Dianne Feinstein.⁤ Feinstein, who ‍was elected to the seat in 1992 and was the oldest member of the chamber at⁣ the age of 90, has been succeeded by Butler, who is a lesbian and only⁣ the third black female senator in history. Butler is a close ally of Kamala Harris,⁤ America’s⁣ vice-president⁤ and the second⁤ black woman to be elected⁢ to the⁤ Senate.

The trial for business fraud involving Donald Trump ‌has begun in New York. In ‍addition to the accusation that Trump and his ‍business inflated the value ⁣of his assets to secure loans, he now faces civil ‍charges. The judge, who will decide the case without a jury, has already ruled that⁤ Trump committed “repeated and persistent fraud” in this matter.
