The West Accuses Russian-Led U.N. Meeting on Peace of Hypocrisy

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, addressed the United Nations Security Council on Monday, promoting peace and diplomacy. However, Western diplomats accused Russia of hypocrisy, given its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. The session, held during Russia’s one-month presidency of the Council, focused on the maintenance of the U.N. charter, international rules, and multilateralism. Lavrov used the opportunity to denounce Russia’s adversaries and portray the West as the true aggressor in the Ukraine conflict. “Nobody allowed the Western minority to speak for all of humankind,” Lavrov said. “They need to be polite and respect all members of the international community.” Despite the theatrics, the United States and European members of the Council remained skeptical of Russia’s intentions.
