The Switch 2 May Lead to Another Nintendo Catastrophe as We Venture into Uncharted Territory

The success of the Nintendo Switch console has been astounding, and a wonderful thing for both Nintendo and its fans, but now that the Switch is past the typical lifespan for a console to be on the market, it puts the company in a strange new situation with a new console, which many are calling the Switch 2 until an official name is revealed. Currently, the Nintendo Switch is the third best-selling video game console in history. With modern technology quickly putting the Switch out of date, it is time for a new machine, yet sales numbers for the Switch are still doing alright despite beginning to decline.

Nintendo Switch was originally released in March 2017, which means this console is now over six years old despite console hardware typically being considered obsolete after 5 or 6 years on the market. The release of the Switch OLED gave increased resolution and size of the display for handheld users, but the processor and other major hardware components remain the same between the systems. Now, with so many people owning a Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED, this could spell disaster for the next console to enter Nintendo’s lineup.

Even though sales numbers for the Nintendo Switch are slowing, it is still managing to stay competitive with other game companies and its sales are surprisingly higher than previous consoles would be at this advanced age of its hardware. Sales of consoles and games contribute to 90% of Nintendo’s revenue, so although the declining sales are gradual it still is something the company needs to stay on top of ahead of the Switch 2’s release.

The Nintendo Switch has sold more than 122 million consoles, a staggering number that also suggests many in the population who play video games already own one of the systems. Nintendo benefited from the unfortunate circumstance of the Covid-19 pandemic which sparked sales of the Nintendo Switch and its game Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which many people began using as a way to connect with others during the lockdown. This led some shoppers who might not have normally purchased a console to spring for the Nintendo Switch, but they may not feel inclined to do so again.

Marketing a new Nintendo console, whether the Switch 2, Super Nintendo Switch, Switch Pro, or any other name it goes by, will present some problems for the company simply because of the overwhelming success that the Nintendo Switch has enjoyed. Nintendo faced this problem previously after the Nintendo Wii saw success with 101.6 million units sold and then the Wii U followed with a meager 12.5 million sold during its lifetime. Although the Wii U was a superior machine, many consumers felt that because they already owned a Wii, they didn’t need the new system. Some even erroneously believed the Wii U was simply an add-on for the Wii due to its shared name.
