As spring of 2024 arrived, the demand for VPN services in Russia surged by around 30%, as reported by “Izvestia” citing data from “Stingray Technologies”, a company specializing in mobile app cybersecurity.
CEO Yuri Shabalin noted that this spike in VPN downloads was a direct result of numerous blockages that rendered many old services ineffective.
Shabalin mentioned, ”While VPN usage remained steady post-initial blockages, the uptick in downloads followed active measures, only to stabilize later.”
Starting March 1, 2024, Russia imposed a ban on promoting services that bypass blocked sites. Roskomnadzor reported 82 blocked sites with VPN ads and issued warnings to 628 resource owners to remove such content.
