Players of Helldivers 2 are engaged in a fierce battle to reclaim planets from Terminids and Automatons. Arrowhead, the developer, has revealed that the intergalactic war is overseen by a single person. While the core gameplay involves combat on alien planets, there is a larger meta-game at play where the community fights to take control of endangered planets. It was previously assumed that opposing factions responded automatically to player-led pushes, but that is not the case.
According to PC Gamer, Arrowhead disclosed that there is a single employee, Joel, who works as the Game Master for Helldivers 2. The Game Master has significant control over the galactic war front and the developers are constantly improving the interaction with the community. CEO Johan Pilestedt mentioned that Dungeons & Dragons has been a major influence on the game’s format.
Despite the fun-sounding nature of Joel’s job, the role of Game Master is more stressful than fans may expect. Instances of players being too efficient have led to the developer improvising scenarios. For example, one of the most sought-after planets, Malevelon Creek, fell prey to the Automatons, leading to a major return to the swampy land by the community.
While Joel is busy balancing Helldivers 2, a recent datamine suggests that the game will soon gain new features. One of these additions could be the Illuminate, an enemy type known for being a menace on the battlefield. Arrowhead has promised more information on their planned roadmap in the near future.
