The Looming Threat: How Hurricanes are Shaping the Future of the Semiconductor Industry

After being closed for over a ‌week, one of the⁤ two plants that ‍extract⁤ high-purity quartz and⁤ silica sand essential for semiconductor production and other advanced technology hardware has resumed operations.

Sibelco made the announcement today regarding the restart of its mining and processing⁢ activities in Spruce Pine, ‍NC following the disruption ⁤caused by Hurricane Helene. The company had previously confirmed the safety of all ‌its‌ employees.

CEO ⁤Hilmar Rode‌ stated, “Although⁣ our communities face a long ⁣road‍ to recovery, restarting our operations and resuming customer shipments are ⁤crucial steps in revitalizing the local economy.”

The impact of Hurricane ‍Helene on the mountain town in western North Carolina led to a‌ temporary halt in high-purity ⁣quartz mining and refining at both Sibelco and The Quartz Corp mines in Spruce Pine, NC – the main sources of this valuable crystalline mineral.

As for The Quartz Corp’s current operational status, there is‍ no immediate update available today.

Sibelco, being the larger mining company among the two in this region, ⁤mentioned last week that while their operations were without power due to minor damage to infrastructure caused by Hurricane Helene. They also ‍assured that their final product stock remained unaffected.‌ “Significant progress has been made in repairing power lines leading to our plants,” Sibelco added. “We are collaborating closely with customers‌ to evaluate their requirements and plan ‌for resuming product shipments ⁢promptly.”
