The Last of Us Part 2’s planned multiplayer mode, which has been in development for over three years, has reportedly suffered setbacks. This is concerning for a game that has already missed its prime opportunity. Developer Naughty Dog has been tight-lipped about the project, with the only official news being confirmation of its existence and a few pieces of concept art. The game was a no-show at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, but Naughty Dog has assured fans that it is still in development. However, the prolonged development time is not promising for the game’s success as a live service hit.
The multiplayer component was originally planned to be part of The Last of Us Part 2 but was spun off to avoid a delay. It was expected to be an iteration of the Factions mode from the first game, which incorporated resource hunting and crafting. However, little is known about the game, and apparent delays have caused concern.
Naughty Dog recently issued a statement about the game, which hinted at a new single-player experience in the works. However, Bloomberg games industry reporter Jason Schreier tweeted that the team working on the multiplayer has been significantly scaled down. Although the statement did not confirm this, it is believed that there has been an internal delay while the project is reassessed.
Despite setbacks, The Last of Us’ multiplayer project has great potential. The Factions mode from the first game remains unique and underappreciated, and the standalone multiplayer title’s setting appears to be expanding on Part 2’s post-apocalyptic version of the United States’ west coast. The sequel’s gameplay advancements, such as the introduction of prone position, offer new gameplay options for Factions.
