Swedish-Iranian dual national executed by Iran

Iran has carried out the execution of Habib Farajollah Chaab, a Swedish-Iranian dissident who was convicted of leading an Arab separatist group that was accused of carrying out attacks, including one on a military parade in 2018 that resulted in the deaths of 25 people. Chaab was sentenced to death for being “corrupt on earth”, which is considered a capital offence under Iran’s strict interpretation of Islamic law. The state broadcaster IRIB reported his execution on Saturday.

The Iranian judiciary’s Mizan Online website reported that “The death sentence for Habib Chaab … nicknamed Habib Asyud, the head of Harakat al-Nidal terrorist group … was executed today, Saturday morning.” In 2020, Iran had announced that its security forces had arrested Chaab in Turkey and taken him to Tehran, but did not disclose where or how he was captured.

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom expressed “dismay” at Chaab’s execution, stating that his government had pleaded with Iran not to carry it out. “The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its application under all circumstances,” he said.
