Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has managed to convey the allure of the dark side and the reasons why Jedi could succumb to it better than Darth Sidious ever could. Cal Kestis’ journey in Jedi: Survivor and its predecessor Jedi: Fallen Order involves him gaining a better understanding of the kind of Jedi he wants to be and learning from the mistakes of his allies from the past.
[Warning: The following article contains spoilers for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor]
Cal taps into the power of the dark side on a couple of occasions, notably when he escapes from Nova Garon and later when he defeats his former ally Bode Akuna after discovering that he was an Imperial spy. The escape sequence showcases Cal’s power in full force as he easily defeats many enemies. Through the interactive nature of gaming, players get to experience the power fantasy element and understand why so many can be corrupted by the dark side, as they could with previous Sith-centric Star Wars titles such as The Force Unleashed, which offered a plethora of abilities that utilized the dark side of the Force as a Sith apprentice, Starkiller.
Despite experiencing the dark side’s power, Cal never fully succumbs to it. He even confides in Merrin about his concerns regarding his potential to do so soon after, to which she reassures him that she will “guide him back” if he ever strays from his path.
Jedi: Survivor also explores a morally complex view of what it means to embrace the dark side through the story of Bode Akuna. As previously mentioned, it’s revealed late in the game’s narrative that Cal’s best friend and a close ally of the Stinger Mantis crew is an Imperial spy. Furthermore, he has become so blinded by compromise that he can hurt and even kill those he cares about if they get in his way. However, his reasoning for doing so is different from what many expect from those who join the Empire.
