Spotify is conducting experiments with its Premium service. Recently, some Spotify users on the free tier noticed that they no longer had access to in-app lyrics. Instead, they received a notification bubble stating, “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium,” along with a link to sign up. Spotify explains that placing the in-app lyrics behind a paywall is part of their routine testing.
“At Spotify, we regularly conduct various tests, some of which contribute to our overall user experience, while others serve as valuable learning experiences,” said CJ Stanley, Spotify’s co-head of global communications, in a statement to The Verge. “We currently have no further updates to share.”
It is possible that Spotify may remove the paywall and make in-app lyrics available to all users again, but there is no specific timeline for this change.
