Spotify Tests Premium Paywall for Publicly Available Lyrics


Spotify is conducting experiments with its Premium service.‌ Recently, some ‌Spotify users on the free tier ​noticed that they no longer had access to in-app lyrics. Instead, ​they ⁢received ⁤a ‍notification bubble stating, “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify ⁤Premium,” along with a link to sign⁣ up. Spotify explains that placing the in-app lyrics behind a paywall is part of their ​routine testing.

“At Spotify, we regularly ‍conduct various tests, some of which ​contribute to our overall user ⁣experience,​ while others serve as valuable‍ learning experiences,” said‌ CJ‍ Stanley, Spotify’s⁢ co-head​ of global communications, in ‍a statement to ​The Verge. “We currently ‍have ‌no further⁣ updates to share.”

It is possible that Spotify ⁣may remove the ‍paywall and make in-app lyrics available to all users again, but there is no specific timeline for this change.
